Daily Hassles Flashcards
(6 cards)
Distal vs proximal
Daily hassles are considered distal causes of stress so directly cause stress
Life changes can be considered proximal causes of stress
Primary and Secondary Appraisal
Lazarus = when we experience a hassle we engage in primary appraisal - work out subjectively how threatening its to our physiological health
. If threatening we engage in secondary appraisal - subjectively consider how well equipped we are to cope with the hassle
Hassles and Uplifts scales
Kanner et al developed hassles and uplifts scale to measure combined effects of daily hassles and uplifts - started with 117 items
Research into daily hassles
Kanner et al researched whether daily hassles were better predictor of physiological ill health
- constructed a hassle scale which 100 participants (45 - 64yrs) completed every month for 9 months. Also completed a SSRS
- completed scale to measure physiological symptoms (Anxiety/depression)
Kanner et al findings
Found significant positive correlation between hassles frequency and physiological symptoms at start and end of study
. Hassles stronger predictor of physiological symptoms than life changes
Evaluation - Gender Differences (W)
Because men and women have different role within most families this means they experience same everyday events differently and therefore there is a gender split in daily hassles
