Primary and Secondary Appraisal

A

Lazarus = when we experience a hassle we engage in primary appraisal - work out subjectively how threatening its to our physiological health
. If threatening we engage in secondary appraisal - subjectively consider how well equipped we are to cope with the hassle

Research into daily hassles

A

Kanner et al researched whether daily hassles were better predictor of physiological ill health
- constructed a hassle scale which 100 participants (45 - 64yrs) completed every month for 9 months. Also completed a SSRS
- completed scale to measure physiological symptoms (Anxiety/depression)

A

Found significant positive correlation between hassles frequency and physiological symptoms at start and end of study
. Hassles stronger predictor of physiological symptoms than life changes
