Hardiness Flashcards
(4 cards)
What is hardiness
A personality type that can cope with stress and acts as a protective barrier
3 aspects
Control = hardy people see themselves as being in charge of their life and not controlled by outside forces
Commitment = involved in world around them and have a sense of purpose. E.g: volunteering
Challenge = see challenge as problems to overcome rather than stressors and see stressful situations as opportunities to learn
Kobasa Study
. 670 American males business executives were studied - assessed stress using SSRS
. According to this 150 found to have high stress but some had low scores indicating factor mediating effects of life events
^ participants who were high on stress but low on illness scored high on the 3 characteristics
Evaluation
Correlational Studies (W) = don’t show cause and effect relationship between variables, other factors could be involved
Hardiness Training (S) = given rise to hardiness training so individuals can learn to see stressors as a challenge
Gender Bias and Ethnocentrism (W) = results can’t be generalised, managers have different living conditions from people in lower positions
