Day 5 Flashcards
(29 cards)
Explain the change in WBC cell size as it matures
Size decreases as it matures
Explain the changes in WBC cell nucleus as it matures.
Nucleus is larger and nucleoli disappears
If you’re unsure about the maturity classification of a cell, what should you do?
classify to the most mature stage
What is leukopoiesis?
The production of WBCs
What are two groups of WBCs ?
Granulocytic and Agranulocytic
Where do granulocytes develop?
Bone marrow
Describe the two different types of granules found in granulocytes
Primary- coarse and dark blue staining
Secondary- replace primary granules as cells develop
What are the three cell types in granulocytic series?
Eosinophils, Basophils and Neutrophils
Describe the granules of an eosinophil
They stain bright red-orange; equal in size and found in the cytoplasm
Describe the granules of a basophil
They stain black to purple; unequal in size, found in cytoplasm and may obscure the nucleus
In order from immature to mature , list the maturation sequence of granulocytes
Myeloblast Promyelocyte Myelocyte Metamyelocyte Band Neutrophil Segmented Neutrophil
What granulocytic maturation sequence is described: the nucleus is round or slightly flattened on one side with NO nucleoli
Myelocyte
When is a myeloblast classified as a promyelocyte?
When is develops distinct granules
What is the last stage in the granulocytic series that is capable of cell division?
Myelocyte
Which stage of the granulocytic series is the dawn of neutrophilia seen?
Myelocyte
Which stage of the granulocytic series can we first distinguish between neutrophils, eosinophils and basophils?
Myelocyte
What granulocytic maturation sequence is described: the nucleus is indented or kidney bean shaped?
Metamyelocyte
Describe what the metamyelocyte granules look like for each cell type?
Neutrophils- granules are pinker and more numerous
Eosinophils- granules are brighter orange-red and more numerous
Basophils- granules are dark purple and more numerous
What must be true about the nucleus of a cell in order to classify as a Band Neutrophil?
Indentation is greater than half the nucleus without any thread-like filaments
What is a synonym for segmented neutrophil?
Polymorphonuclear
What WBC cell type has the highest percentage in the peripheral blood?
Segmented Neutrophils
What is the primary function of a segmented neutrophil?
Functions as a phagocyte
How many segments/lobes does a segmented neutrophil have?
2-5
What is neutrophili, and during what conditions does it occur?
An increase in circulating neutrophils
Cause by inflammation/bacterial infections
