Dealing With Offender Behavior, Anger Management Flashcards
(10 cards)
What’s anger management based off
Uses cognitive principles and cognitive behavioural therapy to recognise why patients are losing control of their behaviour
What are the 3 stages of anger management
1-Cognitive preparations
2-Skills acquisition
3-Application practice
Cognitive preparations
-The offender is asked to recall past experiences of anger allowing the therapist to identify triggers and explain to the offender how their response was irrational
-Someone staring at you at the pub
-The therapist redefines the situation as non threatening to prevent an automatic response
Skills acquisition
Offenders are taught a range of techniques to help them rationally deal with anger provoking situations
-Cognitive - positive self talk
-Behavioral - assertiveness training in how to effectively communicate
-Physiological - meditation
Application practice
-The therapist role plays the anger inducing situation in a controlled environment
-Successful roleplays are met with positive reinforcement
Limited application
-Anger often is seen to have a direct causal relationship with crime however, there are many crimes that are committed for the sake of other purposes like tax evasion and greed
-Programmes can also be misguided as they provide the criminals for justification behind their behaviour
-Psychometric measures found no difference in anger levels between offenders labelled as violent and non violent
Limited long term effects
Blackburn
-Theres little evidence to suggest anger management has long term effect outside
-Role play can’t accurately replicate the environment ie a busy pub on a Saturday night
Electric approach
-Works on many different psychological levels
-Focuses on cognition, behaviour and social situations
-multidisciplinary approach which addresses all the elements which can contribute towards someone’s anger
Extra PEELs
Expensive and requires high levels of commitment from the participants
