Psychological Explenations, Differential Association theory Flashcards
(5 cards)
What is differential association
A theory made by Sutherland based on the social learning theory approach where we learn criminal behaviour through techniques and attitudes
Crime as a learned behaviour
-People internalise pro criminal attitudes towards the law from parents and communities
-If the number of pro crime attitudes weigh out the number of anti crime attitudes then offending will occur
Mathematical prediction for criminal attitude
Measure the frequency, intensity and duration of exposure to pro criminal attitudes to predict the likelihood of developing one
Learning specific criminal techniques
-Communities like prison teach criminal skills like carjacking and how to hide your tracks etc
-This can explain why so many go on to reoffend once out of jail
-Observational learning and imitation
