Describe the haemodynamic changes that occur in erection
Inhibition of sympathetic vasoconstrictorsActivation of parasympathetic stimulation to initiate vasodilationACh released and acts on M3 receptorsCauses increase in intracellular Ca2+ to release nitric oxide synthase which catalyses the synthesis of nitric oxide. Activation of non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic nerves to arteries causes release of NONO diffuses into the SM of the vasculature and leads to relaxation and therefore vasodilation- Increased NO increases cGMP, which causes Ca2+ to be taken up into the intracellular stores. This decreases the intracellular concentration of Ca2+ which decrease the amount of actin-myosin cross bridges therefore causing the SM to relax.
