Unconscious intrapsychic process used to ward off anxiety by preventing conscious awareness of threatening feelings
Adaptive
Acknowledges, solves problem, & decreases anxiety
Palliative
Anxiety decreases but doesn’t solve problem

Tries different ways to decrease anxiety without solving the problem
