Define fertility rate
The average number of children per woman of child bearing age (15-49 years) during her lifetime
Define life expectancy
The average number of years a newborn infant is expected to live, given the mortality rate at the time of their birth.
Define crude birth rate
The annual number of live births per 1000 people
Define crude death rate
The annual number of deaths per 1000 people
Total population growth
How much the population of a place has grown, taking into account births, deaths, immigration and emigration.
Define Replacement rate
The rate required for a population to replace itself from one generation to the next (approx 2.1 births per woman)
Define birth rate
the annual number of live births per 1000 people
Define migration rate
Immigration (incoming) number minus emigration (departing) number per 1000 people
Define Age-sex structure
The composition of a population by age and sex
Define rate of natural increase
The birth rate minus the death rate, expressed as a percentage.
Define percentage urban
the percentage of the population living in areas termed ‘urban’ by that country or the UN
Define GNI per capita
Gross Nation income in Purchasing Power Parity and is a measure of a countys relative wealth in current international dollars. It must be divided by the mid-year population
Define asylum seeker
A person who has fled a country involuntarily and sought protection as a refugee, but whose claim for a refugee status has not yet been assessed.
Define baby boom
An upward spike for a number of years in birth rates; the period in Australia from the late 1940s to the early 1960s when birth rates were higher than they had been since 1920s
Define dependency ratio
the percentage of a population dependant on people who are in the workforce. Statistically, the dependency ratio is the percentage of a population aged below 15 years and above 65 years.
Define food insecurity
a situation in which people do not ave physical and economic access to the basic food they need to work and function properly
Define forced migration
When people are forced to leave an area against their will or as a result of life threatening circumstances
Define voluntary migration
when people migrate from one location to another by their own choice
