What does propaganda mean?
Spreading messages to encourage people to think in a positive way about someone
What does censorship mean?
Presenting people from saying or publishing things that would damage someone’s reputation
Who were the ladies in waiting?
They were ladies who looked after the Queen
Who were courtiers?
People who attended the Royal Court
Who were the advisors?
People who helped run the country?
What does patronage mean?
The granting of titles, land and favours and the Queen

Who were the Privy Council?
19 men whose job was to advise the Queen and help her run the country
Who was the Secretary of State?
Queen’s main advisor and the lead member of the Privy Council- this was William Cecil
What were Royal Proclamations?
When the Queen made laws without Parliament’s consent
Who were the nobility?
Wealthy and powerful men who owned large areas of land (e.g. dukes, earls and lords)
Who were the gentry?
Landowners who grew in wealth and influence. They didn’t have titles so they’re below the rank of nobles
Who were the labouring poor?
Those who worked with their hands, often for low wages and frequently lived in poverty
What does rack renting mean?
A sharp increase in rent
What does enclosure mean?
Closing off common land
Who were the vagabonds?
A vagrant who has turned to crime to support themselves
Who were the vagrants?
No home or employment and are forced to beg
Who were the impotent poor?
‘Helpless poor’- those too young, old or sick to work
Who were the able bodied poor?
People who could and wanted to work but became unemployed
What were alms houses?
Places that provided food, shelter and clothes to the ‘impotent’ poor
What were the Houses of Correction?
The place where the ‘idle poor’ and beggars were imprisoned
What was the poor rate?
A local tax collected by the JP’s to support the poor
Who were the puritans?
Extreme Protestants who believed in a purer form of worship
What was a swindler?
A person who uses deception, often to get money
