Definitions #2 Flashcards
(16 cards)
Simple random design
e.g. using random grid coordinates
Systematic random
sampling locations are arranged in a regular pattern e.g. grid or checkerboard
(produces more precise estimate of stable variables)
Clustered random
cluster centres located at random + then sample units w/in each cluster are also located at random
Pattern, 2017
ear tuffs are a robust feature for rhino identification
Cinkova, 2014
rhino contact calls can be used to identify individuals
Alibhai, 2008
footprints can be used to identify individual rhinos
Footprint Identification Technology (FIT)
accurately identifies individual animals through photo of footprint (Wildtrack, 2018)
Tende et al., 2014
Individual DNA-identification of lions can be used from DNA samples found in saliva, faeces and hair
Ground counts
walked or driven transects
Call back surveys
device plays a sound (e.g. injured prey) that attracts predators to enable data collection
VHF collars
a.k.a. Very High Frequency
~ emit pulsing radio signals which allows the animal to be located
GPS tracking collars
allows for remote detection and stores the animals location data either in the collar or downloaded remotely
Allodiveristy
introduced diversity
Distance effect
immigration + emigration affected by distance from colonist sources
(Further away = more travel time = less likely)
Rescue effect
decrease in isolation = decrease chance of extinction due to increased chance of immigration
National parks act as…
metaphorical islands
