Medial → Towards the center
Lateral → Away from the center
Superior / Inferior
Superior → Above
Inferior → Below
Proximal / Distal
Proximal → Closer to the start of a structure (e.g., start of a vessel)
Distal → Further away from the start of a structure
Origin / Terminal
Origin → Beginning of a structure
Terminal → End of a structure
Anterior / Posterior
Anterior (Ventral) → Front
Posterior (Dorsal) → Back
Afferent / Efferent
Afferent → Carrying toward a center (e.g., CNS)
Efferent → Carrying away from a center
Superficial / Deep
Superficial → Closer to the surface
Deep → Further from the surface
Internal / External
Internal → Inside (e.g., internal muscles)
External → Outside (e.g., external intercostal muscles)

Flexion / Extension
Flexion → Bending movement, decreases the angle of a joint
Extension → Opposite of flexion, increases the angle of a joint
What is Abduction?
Moving away from the midline
What is Adduction?
Moving toward the midline
What is Circumduction?
The distal end of a limb moves in a circular motion
What is Rotation?
Turning a bone around its own long axis
What is Medial Rotation?
Rotates toward the midline
