What can dentists prescribe?
on an NHS prescription
- only medicines on the Dental Formulary
in theory anything
- private prescription
What is a NFA-VPS?
medicine for non-food animals, supplied by Vet/Pharmacist/Any qualified person
no need for a written prescription
should not be easily accessible to the public
What is a POM-V?
POM that can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and supplied by a veterinary surgeon or
a pharmacist with a written prescription
- only prescribed by vet
What is a POM-VPS?
POM that can be prescribed and supplied by a veterinary surgeon, a pharmacist or a suitably
qualified person on an oral OR written prescription
written prescription is only required if the supplier is not the prescriber
- can be prescribed by someone other than a vet
What is an AVM-GSL?
an authorised veterinary medicine that is available on general sale.
What is SAES?
an unlicensed veterinary medicine that does not require a marketing authorisation because it meets criteria laid out in Schedule 6 of the Veterinary Medicines Regulations
What is an unauthorised veterinary medicine?
an unlicensed medicine that does not have a marketing authorisation and is not eligible for exemption through the SAES
it can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon under the Cascade
- includes human medicines used for animals
What are the requirements for a veterinary medicine prescription?
prescriber details: name, address, telephone number, qualification and signature
owner details: name and address
animal details: identification and species
date: valid for 6 months
medicine details: name, quantity, dose, administration instructions, any warnings/withdrawal period
prescribed under the cascade
number of repeats
What is required for veterinary prescriptions when CDs have been prescribed?
prescriber registration number (RCVS)
declaration that it was prescribed for an animal under the care of the veterinarian
valid for 28 days
What is required for the sale/supply of POM-V, POM-VPS and NFA-VPS medicines?
physical presence of pharmacists
- unless individually authorised in advance by pharmacists
What is required for a veterinary medicine label?
prescriber details: name
owner details: name and address
pharmacy details: name and address
animal details: identification and species
date of supply
expiry date
medicine details: name/description, dosage and administration instructions
warnings
withdrawal period
for animal treatment only
keep out of reach of children
What records must be kept for veterinary prescriptions?
medicine details: name, quantity
date of supply
batch number
supplier or recipient details: name and address
if it is a written prescription: name and address of prescriber, keep a copy (electronically if needed)
keep records for at least 5 years
pharmacies that supply POM-V and POM-VPS medicines must undertake an annual audit.
