depth cues Flashcards
(13 cards)
what are depth cues?
depth cues are visual cues that allow us to judge distance and depth of stimuli
what are monocular depth cues?
visual cues that only use one eye
examples of monocular depth cues
- accomodation
- linear perspective
- texture gradient
- height in visual field
- interposition
- relative size
what is accomodation?
adjustment of shape of lens to focus on objects at different distances, the brain receives info about eye muscle change
what is a pictorial depth cue used for?
to create depth on 2D surfaces
what is interposition?
one object obscuring another, making it seem further away (overlap)
what is linear perspective?
parallel lines appear to converge in distance
what is texture gradient?
detail on surfaces diminish as they recede into the distance
what is relative size?
objects producing larger retinal images as perceived as closer
what is height in visual field?
objects closer together seem further away
what is retinal disparity?
difference between the retinal images receivied by each eye. the closer an object is, the greater the disparity
what is convergence?
eye muscles turn inward to focus on close objects making the brain detect and interpret depth from changes in tension in the eye muscles
what are binocular depth cues?
visual cues using both eyes
