help us make sense of visual stimuli by grouping together seperate phenomenons into meaningful wholes

A
- organises visual info by seperating important aspects into ‘figure’ and ‘ground’

tendency to mentally fill in gaps in an incomplete object to perceive it as a whole

tendency to perceive stimuli with similar features as belonging together in a group
