Diabetes Flashcards
(12 cards)
why must we have a balanced blood glucose concentration?
so that cells have enough glucose to perform respiration
what factor increases our blood glucose concentration
eating foods with carbohydrates
what hormone does the pancreas release when BGC is too high?
insulin
describe the affect of the release of insulin
insulin stimulates liver and muscle cells to uptake excess glucose by storing it as glycogen
which organ converts glucose into glycogen
liver
what factor decreases our blood glucose concentration
exercising
what hormone does the pancreas release when BGC is too low?
glucagon
describe the affect of the release of glucagon
glucagon stimulates liver cells to break down glycogen into glucose and release it into the bloodstream
what do muscle cells do due to the release of glucagon
muscle cells reduce the rate respiration to reduce the breakdown of glucose
describe the cause and treatment of TYPE 1 diabetes
- pancreas fails to produce enough insulin
- treated by insulin injection
describe the cause and treatment of type 2 diabetes
- cells dont respond to insulin hormone
- exercise and reduced carbohydrates to reduce need to insulin
what do both types of diabetes cause?
blood glucose concentration becomes dangerously high
