Plant Hormones Flashcards
(12 cards)
what are auxins?
hormones in the tips of roots and shoots used to controll growth
what do auxins do in shoots
in shoots, auxins promote cell growth
what do auxins do in roots
in roots, auxins inhibit cell growth
what are shoots in terms of gravi/phototropism
shoots are positively phototropic and negtaively gravitropic
what are roots in terms of gravi/phototropism
roots are positively gravitropic and negitively phototropic
what are the 2 commercial uses of auxins
- weed killers
- rooting powder for clones
how can auxins only kill weeds and not other plants?
- they are stimulated to only affects broad leaved plants
how can auxins be weed killers?
- they cause the plant to grow too much which kills it
why do auxins diffuse to the shaded/lower side of a tip?
to elongate/ inhibit it and make it curve
what are 3 commercial uses of gibberelin?
- rapid germination all year round
- large fruit/flowers
- seedless fruit
what is ethene used for?
to riped fruits.
how does gibberelin allow plants to grow all year round?
It breaks seed dormancy so they can germinate without the required conditions that may only be present at a certain time of year
