Thermoregulation Flashcards
(10 cards)
what is thermoregulation?
keeping the internal body temperature at a constant 37 degrees
what do receptors in the body detect?
they detect the internal temperature of blood
what do receptors in the epidermis do?
send nerve impulses to the brain
name the four things that happen when we are too HOT
- vasodilation
- hair erector muscles relax
- blood vessels dilate
- sweat glands release sweat
why do blood vessels dilate?
so that blood flows close to surface and more heat energy is transferred to surroundings
why is sweat released?
so that heat energy can evapourate into surroundings
name the four things that happen when we are too COLD
- vasoconstriction
- hair erector muscles contract
- blood vessels constrict
- muscles contract rapidly (shiver)
why do hair erector muscles contract?
to act as an insulator and trap in air
why do we shiver?
so that waste heat energy can be produced from respiration
why does the blood vessels constrict?
so that less blood flows close to surface and heat is conserved
