Diabetes Flashcards
not on test lowk (11 cards)
pancreas
exocrine and endocrine gland, but mostly exocrine
exocrine pancreatic duct delivers what to the small intestine?
bicarbonate and digestive enzymes
Islets of Langerhans
endocrine part of pancreas:
- beta cells = secrete insulin
- alpha cells = produce glucagon
Normal blood glucose
stable even with food intake and muscle activity changes
Glucose Homeostasis
insulin and glucagon regulate breakdown of glycogen into glucose and synthesis of glycogen
insulin
stimulates uptake of glucose from blood into all body cells by exocytosis of intracellular vesicles containing GLUT-4 transporters
brain and glucose
relies on glucose almost entirely, uptakes sugars even without insulin
diabetes mellitus
deficiency of insulin or
a decreased response to insulin in target tissues
type 1 diabetes
- Juvenile diabetes
- autoimmune destruction of pancreatic B cells that produce insulin
- NO INSULIN
type 2 diabetes
- Adult-onset diabetes
- Due to “insulin resistance”
- INSULIN NORMAL but desensitized cells
