1870 Elementary Education Act
A starting point for compulsory education;it started universal education but left the responsibility of attending with school boards
1876 Elementary Education Act
Started some element of free education for some pupils and narrowed the laws on employment of children.
1880 Elementary education act
Local authorities required to make laws about children attending school
1891 elementary education act
The start of free education for as all the government pays a grant for all children between the ages of 3 and 15 and fees can no longer be charged for elementary schools

butler act- it implemented a new structure of education after world war II. it created primary and secondary schools it also created free secondary education for all

childminders and nurseries are required to register with the LEA and be regulated and inspected

an important report relating to children with special educational needs. Some of this was enacted in the 1981 education act.

introduction of the National Curriculum
1996 Tomlinson report
A report relating to special educational needs students and students with disabilities. It dealt with inclusive learning.
1997 New labour voted into power
they promised to focus on education education education in a famous speech by tony blair
1998 Sure Start
A programme to support children aged 0-3 with their health and development. Supported families to give children the best start.
1999 protection of children act
A list to be kept of people not suitable to work with children
2001 Special Educational Needs and disability act
Relates to discrimination on the grounds of disability in all sectors of education.
Every Child Matters
A green paper- discussion about how to keep children safe
2004 children act
established the children’s commissioner and service for LEAs to provide for the welfare of children
2008 Education and skills act
Raised the school leaving age to 18. Students must be in some form of training
2001 wolf report
Has led to the requirement for students to continue studying Maths and English after 16 if not achieved a pass.
