Diffusion, Osmosis, Active Transport+basic Cell Divison Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is diffusion?
Diffusion is the spreading of particles (liquid/gas) resulting in net movement from an area of high to low concentration
What is rate of diffusion increased by?
Increase in temperature, increase in concentration gradient, surface area
Surface area to volume ratio=
Ratio= surface area/volume
How are alveoli involved in diffusion?
They maximize the surface area in the lungs.
Osmosis meaning?
The passage of water molecules across a semi permeable membrane from a solution with a high concentration to a low concentration.
What is active transport?
The movement of substances from a more dilute solution to a more concentrated solution, requiring energy from respiration.
What does active transport work against?
The concentration gradient
Cell division (nucleus)?
The nucleus consists of chromosomes and their genes made of a molecule called DNA
what is a gene?
A gene is a small section of DNA that controls a characteristic of your body.
What is cell division used for?
For multicellular organisms to grow and repair. Also used by organsims that reproduce asexually (bacteria).
3 simple steps of cell division:
DNA replication, mitosis, 2 diploid
Final part of cell cycle?
The splitting of the cell membrane to produce 2 identical cells.
