Growth of bacteria Flashcards
(11 cards)
What can certain bacteria cause?
Diseases
Formula for cell division?
Number of cells= initial number x 2 to the power of the number of divisions.
Why is the aseptic technique used?
To prevent contamination from bacteria and viruses.
Step 1 (Aseptic)
Petra dishes and culture media (agar) mist be sterilized before use.
Step 2 (Aseptic)
Agar (nutrients for bacteria) must be placed in the Petri dish)
Step 3 (Aseptic)
Sterilise innoculating loops through a flame before using them to transfer bacteria to the agar.
Step 4 (Aseptic)
Lid of Petri dish should be partly secured with tape and placed upside down.
Step 5 (Aseptic)
Culture should be incubated at 25 degrees.
Why should the Petri dish be placed upside down?
To prevent condensation from interfering with the growth.
Why should the tape only be partly secured?
To prevent any bacteria from escaping but make sure it still has enough air to breathe.
What happens if the culture is incubated above/below 25 degrees?
Above= overgrowth
Under= may slow down the prices or kill the bacteria.
