Digestive System Flashcards
(43 cards)
What is a heterotroph?
An organism that cannot make its own food.
What is the function of the alimentary canal?
Ingest, mechanically/chemically digest, absorb nutrients, and egest waste
What organs make up the human digestive system?
Alimentary canal, salivary glands, liver, pancreas
What are the three parts of the small intestine?
Duodenum, jejunum, ileum
What are the four parts of the large intestine?
Caecum, colon, rectum, anal canal
What is the function of the mouth in digestion?
Chewing (mechanical digestion) and mixing with saliva
What is saliva composed of?
Water, mineral salts, salivary amylase, mucin, lysozyme
What is peristalsis?
Muscle contractions that move food through the alimentary canal
What are examples of the gastric pit secretions?
HCl, pepsinogen, GIF, mucus.
What does pepsin do?
Breaks proteins into polypeptides in acidic conditions
What are the three parts of the small intestine?
Duodenum (digestion), jejunum & ileum (absorption)
What is bile’s function?
Emulsifies fats, neutralizes acid, aids peristalsis
What enzymes does pancreatic juice contain?
Amylase, lipase, trypsin, chymotrypsin, nucleases
How are glucose and galactose absorbed?
Actively transported into blood capillaries
What are micelles?
Fatty acids + bile salts, aiding lipid absorption
What is the main function of the large intestine?
Absorb water, form vitamins, and expel waste
What protects the stomach from self-digestion?
Mucus and secretion of inactive pepsinogen
How is bile secretion controlled?
By the hormone Secretin
What are chylomicrons?
Fat-protein complexes absorbed into the lymph
What are the roles of villi in the small intestine?
Increase surface area for nutrient absorption
What triggers gastric juice secretion?
Nervous system (smell/sight) and hormone gastrin
What are the key functions of the stomach?
Mix food, digest proteins, absorb alcohol and salts, secrete gastric intrinsic factor (GIF)
What is chyme?
Semi-liquid material produced in the stomach and passed into the duodenum
What is the role of HCl in the stomach?
Provides optimum pH, denatures proteins, starts hydrolysis of food, and kills bacteria
