Digestive system Flashcards
(33 cards)
The first stages of digestion begin in mouth with :
Chewing & Saliva secreted
Name the 4 functions of saliva :
Keeps mouth moist , Salivary amylase digests starch , Antibacterial action , Facilitates swallowing
Regulation of salivary secretion;
Parasympathetic:
Increases salivary secretion
Regulation of salivary secretion;
Parasympathetic Increases salivary secretion to respond to ,
Conditioned Reflex as :
Smelling, Hearing & Seeing food
Regulation of salivary secretion;
Parasympathetic Increases salivary secretion to respond to ,
Unconditioned Reflex as :
Presence of food in mouth
Regulation of salivary secretion;
Sympathetic:
Decreases salivary secretion
Swallowing starts voluntary & completed involuntary through :
Swallowing center in Medulla
Swallowing first phase :
Buccal phase is Voluntary ; Tongue is Elevated & Pressed against hard palate, Pushing the food bolus backwards towards Pharynx
Swallowing second phase :
Pharyngeal phase is Involuntary ; Soft palate is Elevated to close the Nasopharynx & epiglottis Folds down to close the Larynx.
Successive contractions of Superior , Middle & Inferior pharyngeal constrictor muscles push the food bolus to Esophagus.
When food reaches esophagus, Upper esophageal sphincter relaxes & food enters the esophagus
Swallowing third phase :
Esophageal phase is Involuntary ; Peristaltic contractions push the food bolus down aided by gravity ; Lower esophageal sphincter relaxes , allowing food to pass to stomach
Name the 3 parts of stomach :
Fundus (above) , Body (middle) , Pylorus (below)
Stomach STORES food & continuous digestion by mixing food with :
Acid & Enzymes to create Chyme
stomach Acid inhibits :
Bacterial growth
Name the organ in stomach that allows chyme to enter small intestine gradually :
Pyloric sphincter
Vomiting mechanism; gastric mucosa send to Vomiting Center in Medulla which send impulses to contract :
Diaphragm & Abdominal muscles ; Squeezing Stomach & Expelling its contents
Excessive vomiting can lead to :
Dehydration & Loss of electrolytes
Most digestion & absorption take place in Small Intestine ;
Name the 3 parts of small intestine :
Duodenum , Jejunum & ileum
Digestion is carried out by Intestinal Enzymes aided by exocrine secretions from 2 accessory organs called :
Pancreas & Liver
Watery chyme becomes semisolid feces as :
Water & Electrolytes are absorbed in Large intestine
Feces pass to rectum to leaves the GIT through :
Anus
Name the organ in large intestine that is under voluntary control :
External anal sphincter
Pancreas endocrine part secretes :
Insulin & Glucagon
Pancreas exocrine part secretes :
Pancreatic juice into Duodenum
Name the content in pancreatic juice that neutralizes acidic chyme :
Sodium bicarbonate
