Digestive System Flashcards
1
Q
what are the two subdivisions of the digestive system
A
- gastrointestinal tract
- accessory organs
2
Q
What are the four main processes of digestion?
A
- ingestion
- digestion
- absorption
- defecation
3
Q
name the five basic layers of the GI tract and their composition.
A
- Mucosa
- epithelium with multiple goblet cells. Stratified squamous: mouth, pharynx, esophagus, and anal canal. Simple columnar: stomach, intestines - Submucosa
- areolar CT: blood, lymphatic vessels, submucosal nerve plexus - Muscularis Externa
- smooth muscle, inner circular layer, outer longitudinal layer, myenteric nerve plexus between layers - Serosa or adventitia
- cavity = lumen - Enteric Nervous System
- myenteric nerve plexus controls muscularis externa. submucous plexus controls the activity of mucosal glands and muscle
4
Q
What composes the oral cavity?
A
- lips
- cheeks
- palate
- hard palate - 2 maxillae and palatine bones
- soft palate - posterior projection = uvula = closes nasopharynx when ingestion - tongue
- connected to hyoid bone
- papillae = taste buds

Four regions of the stomach.
A
- cardiac region
- fundus
- body
- pyloric region
8
Q
What is the composition of gastric glands?
A
- chief cells - secrete pepsinogen and gastric lipase
- parietal cells - secrete HCl and intrinsic factor
- goblet cells - mucus
- G cells - secrete gastrin
9
Q
List the components of the small intestines.
A
- duodenum - the first fold, extra glands secrete alkaline fluid to protect against stomach acid
- Jejunum - middle section
- Ileum - attached to caecum, has lymph nodes called Peyer’s patches that protect against infection
10
Q
Which part of the pancreas secretes hormones such as insulin and glucagon?
