What is ingestion?
The act of taking in food. (putting it in your mouth)
What is Digestion?
When the 4 main biomolecules begin to break down
What is Absorption?
When the broken down food is now absorbed by the cells
(nutrients etc.)
What is Elimination?
(defacation)
The process when the excess food sans it’s nutrients, is deleviered out of the body
What are the two types of digestion?
Chemical and physical
What digesiton does the mouth provide?
Chemical and physical
saliva=chemical
Teeth=physical
What is the diffrence between physical and chemical digestion?
What is emulsification?
What is a bolus?
A ball of food formed by the toungue
What is peristalsis?
The muscular contraction of the esophagus to move (bolus) down to the stomach
What is caridac sphincter?
Muscular contraction at the end of the esophagus
relaxes=food goes to stomach
tenses= blocks food from stomach
How come the sotmach is safe from it’s own acidic insides?
Speacial cells that divide to protect themselves and (MUCUS WALL)
which main act does the mouth provide?
Ingestion
where does physical digestion occur?
mouth, liver, stomach, gall bladder, duodenum,
Where does chemical digestion occur?
mouth, stomach, pancreas, duodenum, colon
what is propulsion?
The act of moving food thoruhg peristalisis
where does propulsion occur?
esophagus, stomach, duodenum, jejunum, ilieum, colon
where does absoption occur?
small intestine and large intestine
