Digestive System TEST Flashcards
(38 cards)
Autotrophic
Organisms that produce their own food through photosynthesis or chemosynthesis
Heterotrophic
Organisms that must consume their food
Ingestion
The taking in of nutrients
Digestion
The breaking down of nutrients into their small intestine
Absorption
Blood delivers nutrients to cells
Egestion
Elimination of unwanted or indigestible food
Mechanical
A physical process that breaks up food into small pieces
Chemical
Changes food into its building blocks
Teeth
Mechanical Digestion
Salivary Glands
Produce Salavia and the starch digesting enzyme salivary amylase
Tongue
A muscle that moves food to back of mouth for swallowing
Epiglottis
Prevents food from entering the trachea
Uvula
Prevents food from entering the nasal cavity (nose) upon swallowing
The Pharynx
-Common area that both food and air passes through
-No digestion occurs in the pharynx
The Esophagus
-Little to no digestion occurs
-Approximately 10 in long
-Peristalsis begins
Peristalsis
Wave like involuntary smooth muscle concentration
Cardic (esophageal) Sphincter Valve
Separates esophagus from stomach and prevents back flow of food and stomach acid
Acid Refluex (GERD)
Stomach acid back tracks into the lower part of the esophagus
Mechanical Digestion
Occurs by means of 3 sets of muscle
Chemical Digestion
Of protein takes place here
Hyrdochloric Acids
Lowers the pH to activate the protein digesting enzyme, pepsin
Other Information
Inner lining of the stomach is protected by a mucous membrane
Protective mucous is also secreted into the stomach contents
Pyloric Sphincter Valve
Separates stomach from small intestine and prevents back flow of partially digested food
Duodenum
Enzymes and bile are released into this first part of the small intestine
