DIKW (Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom) Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the DIKW hierarchy?
a conceptual framework that categorizes the different levels of understanding derived from data.
Raw, unprocessed facts or observations, such as numbers, dates, or simple measurements. For example, “The number 1,200” in a production scenario.
Data
Data that has been organized or given context, making it meaningful. For example, “The output of 1,200 units per hour” provides context to the data point.
Information
The understanding of patterns, principles, and relationships within information. It involves inference and interpretation, such as recognizing that high output indicates efficient production.
- Knowledge
The ability to apply knowledge to make sound decisions or judgments. For instance, understanding that increasing machine efficiency reduces costs and improves profitability.
Wisdom
Key distinctions
Information adds context to data.
Knowledge involves understanding underlying principles.
Wisdom applies principles to real-world decisions.
The statement “The machine starts at 8:00 a.m.” exemplifies
Data
The machine operates from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.” represents
Information
“The output of 1,200 units per hour” reflects _____ that, when interpreted, becomes _____.
Data, knowledge
“Knowing that increasing machine speed can improve output” demonstrates ______.
Wisdom
