  • Allergic reaction - (systemic/acute urticaria, angioedema)
  • Anaphylaxis (respiratory distress, threatened airway, hypotension)
  • Extrapyramidral reactions (dystonic & dysphoric reactions to anti-psychotic medications)

Benadryl - Special Information

A
  • Cumulative depressant effects occur in presence of alcohol &/or other sedatives
  • Use with caution in asthma & children under 20 lbs due to thickened bronchial secretions
  • Assess effectiveness in treating allergy/anaphylaxis by observing for decrease in erythema & itching
  • Assess effectiveness in treating extrapyramidral reactions by observing for a decrease in facial & neck spasms
