  • Hyperkalemia
  • CHF
  • Edema/Sodium retention
  • Renal failure (relative, depending on volume status)

  • Contains lactic acid that acts as a buffer
  • Monitor patient to prevent circulatory overload
  • May use in patients with suspected head injury to maintain cerebral perfusion

  • 20 ml/kg initial bolus in shock; 20 ml/kg/hr maximum maintenance dosage
