what is Bowlby’s Maternal Deprivation Theory?
Bowlby considered there was critical persons from about 2 - 2.5 years when babies should have continuous unbroken relationships with 1 person (monotropy)
Stated Sepration plus deprecation was a bond disruption.
what is deprivation?
Occurs when a bond that has formed between caregiver and infant has been broken.
What was the aims of Bowlbys (1944) 44 juvenile thieves study?
To see if the deprivation of a child in early life has long term consequences.
What was the 44 juvenile thieves method?
Case Study.
Looked into background of 44 adolescents who were caught stealing.
Control group of 44 ‘emotionally disturbed’ adolescents who didn’t steal.
What were the results of the 44 juvenile thieves study?
17/44 of thieves experience frequent separation from mother before age of 2. Only 2/44 in control
14/44 thieves diagnosed as Psychopaths, and 12/14 of those had separation from mother.
What did Bowlby conclude?
Deprivation of the child from is Primary Care-Giver in early life cause harmful long-term consequences.
Positive and Negative evaluations of 44 juvenile thieves study.
- Correlational not causation study.
- May be extanious variables effecting results, e.g. poverty.
- Case study may not be representative of whole population.
