what are characteristics of secure attachment?
Strong bond between child and caregiver.
If separated child becomes distressed, however when reunited easily comforted.
what are characteristic of Insecure-avoidant attachment?
If separated from caregiver, child not distressed.
Can be comforted by stranger.
Child generally avoids social interactions with others.
what are characteristics of insecure-resistant attachment?
the child is uneasy around caregiver however becomes upset when separated.
Resist comfort from caregiver.
What was the aims of the Ainsworth et al (1978) strange situation study?
Assess how children react under conditions of stress and also new conditions.
What was the method of the strange situation study?
controlled observation, 12-18 month old babies left in room with mother.
8 different scenarios occurred, baby approached by stranger, left alone, mother returning.
Observed babies behavior.

70% securely attached

What are the types of cultures that affect attachment?
Individualistic culture:
Emphasises personal independence and achievement at expense of group goals.
Collectivist culture:
Emphasises family and work goals above individual needs and desires.
