Diversity Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is Binomial Nomenclature?
It means a two part name. We use it to name organisms (first name=genus, second name=species) Ex.homo sapien (human)
What do we need to remember when writing the name of organisms?
To underline both words when handwriting and to italicize when typing
What is the difference between unicellular and multicellular?
Unicellular organisms are only made up of one cell that preforms all life processes and multicellular organisms are made up of many cells that work together to preform different functions
What is a dichotomous key?
It is a device used to help identify unknown organisms. It works by asking yes or no questions about each organism that has one of two answers
Who was Carl Linneas?
He was a Swedish botanist who devised a classification system for living things in the 1700s
What is an acidophile?
Archaea living in acidic environments
What is a thermophile?
Archaea living in hot environments
What is a halophile?
Archaea living in salty environments
Are viruses living?
Viruses are non-living but they depend on the living
What 2 components make up viruses?
Capsid (proteins form an outer coat around the nucleic acid core protecting it) and a Nucleic Acid Core (Genetic material consisting of either DNA or RNA)
What is a Bacteriophage?
Viruses that infect bacteria
What is Taxonomy?
The science of classifying living organisms. The purpose is to identify organisms and show relationships among organisms.
What are phylogenetic trees?
It is a tool used by scientists to represent a hypothesis of the evolutionary relationships
