divisions of the nervous system Flashcards
(15 cards)
what are the two main branches of the nervous system
- central nervous system
- periphal nervous system
what does the central nervous system do
all incoming info comes to the CNS and all info comes out of the CNS
what is the spinal cord responsible for
reflex actions such as the knee jerk effect
what is the brain the centre of ?
what are it’s 3 main elements
- conscious awarness
1. cerebellum (motion and balance)
2. cerebrum (sensing and thinking)
3. brain stem (automatic actions)
what body structures does the central nervous system consist of ?
- brain
- spinal cord
what does the peripheral nervous system do
sends info to CNS and allows communication between CNS and the rest of the body
what body structures does the peripheral nervous system consist of ?
- cranial nerves
- spinal nerves
what are the 2 sub-systems of the peripheral nervous system ?
- automatic nervous system
- somatic nervous system
what body structures is the ANS made of
- heart muscle
- smooth muscle
- glands
what does the ANS do
recieves signals from sensory neurons to create involuntary responses in cardiac and smooth muscles (heart, stomach)
what is the ANS split into
- parasympathetic
- systematic
what is the parasympathetic branch
- ‘rest and digest’
- slows body down and reverses the effects of the sympathetic branch
what is the sympathetic branch
- ‘active and alert’
- prepares the body for fight or flight response
- active during sports
what body parts is the somatic nervous system made up of?
sensory and motor neurons
what does the somatic nerovus system do
controls voluntary movement in the skeletal muscles
