What is Contralateral control

A

Each hemisphere controls functions carried out by opposite side of the body.
The left hemisphere processes visual stimuli and movement on the right side of the body
The right hemisphere processes visual stimuli movement on the left side of the body

98% of right handed people, is lateralised to the left hemisphere
Speech production is localised to the left frontal lobe (brocas area)
comprehension is localised to the left temporal lobe (wernickes area)

A

Brain damaged patient could not produce language, could only speak the word ‘tan’
Understood speech and followed instructions
Autopsy revealed damage to base of frontal lobe in left hemisphere
