(19 cards)
what is the role of the endocrine system
- regulate cell or organ activity
- control vital physiological processes in the body
- works along side the nervous sytem and releases hormones/chemical messengers from glands
where are hormones released to
- released to the blood stream
what do hormones effect
- organs that have receptors for those hormones
- influenced proccesses such as growth, metabolism and reproduction
what can an inbalance in hormones cause
- various dysfunctions
what is the pituitary gland
- master gland
- secretes hormones
- controls activity of all other glands
what is the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland responsible for
- responsible for releasing hormone ACTH
- ACTH stimulates adrenal cortex to release cortisoll during times of chronic stress to give us energy
what is the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland responsible for
- releasing oxytocin
- responsible for producing contractions in uterus during childbirth
what hormones does the thyroid gland produce
- thyroxine
- triodothyronine
where is the thyroid gland located

what is the function of the testes
- male puberty
- sperm production
what hormone does the pineal gland produce
melatonin
where is the pineal gland located
in the middle of the brain
what is the function of the pineal gland
for sleep production
