Divisions Of The Nervous System Flashcards
(8 cards)
1
Q
What two parts made up the central nervous system
A
Brain and spinal cord
2
Q
What was the role of central nervous system
A
- complex processing
- brain - all conscious and unconscious processing
- spinal cord - receives and transmits information to and from body, reflex processing
3
Q
What’s role of Peripheral nervous system
A
- body wide network of messenger neurons
- sensory neurons to CNS, motor neurons away from CNS
- contains ANS and SNS
4
Q
What’s the role of Somatic nervous system
A
Controls skeletal muscles (for movement)
Voluntary system (under conscious control)
5
Q
What’s the role of autonomic nervous system
A
Controls actions of internal organs and glands
Involuntary system
(E.g. heartbeat, insulin production)
6
Q
What does the ANS consist of
A
Sympathetic division
Parasympathetic division
7
Q
What’s the role of sympathetic division of ANS
A
- increases bodily activities. Releases noradrenaline. Activates in stress response (Fight or Flight)
- heart rate, sweat and breathing rate increases
- dilates pupils
- inhibits digestion and decreased saliva production
8
Q
What the role of the parasympathetic division of ANS
A
- decreases bodily activities. Releases acetylcholine activates in rest. Returns body to relaxed state
- heart rate, sweat and breathing rate decrease
- pupils constrict
- stimulates digestion
