How would a lighting represent the main scenery of the play?
A lighting designer would use natural style lighting to represent sunlight and moonlight as the majority of the play is outdoors
How could you use lighting to represent act three in the woods
when Phil shows Cathy how to suffocate Adam
Up lighting can be used to cast shadows over Phils body
This would give him a threatening appearance and hinted but he is on the dark and dangerous side
This would affect the audience as they would understand the play is foreshadowing something bad is going to happen
How could lighting highlight a characters position in the group?
The characters with more authority in the gang such as John Tate and Phil would have more brightly illuminated sharply defined lighting to emphasise the importance over the other characters
How would characters such as Brian and Adam be represented using lighting?
Characters with much less authority and power in the gang would have more dimly lit lighting to represent them as it would draw less attention to them for the audience to accentuate how the other characters see them as a group
How would Phil and Leah‘s be presented using lighting?
Using two separate spotlights on both the characters when they are sat next to each other would represent how distant they are from each other
The darkness in the background between the characters would highlight the emotional distance between them
How can lighting create a gloomy mood?
Dimmer lighting with colder tones and blue shades would reflect how unhappy Phil feels when Leah leaves in Act 4
How can lighting be used to symbolise danger in the play?
Red lighting widely spread across the stage with symbolise danger when Phil threatens to kill Brian
It can also be used when Mark and John are explaining the events of Adams abuse
A flood red light would emphasise the buildup of tension that the audience gain when experiencing the danger
And intense beam on certain characters can also add a significant amount of tension as the audience wonders who will resolve the conflict
How can the lighting be used to emphasise Adams disorientation when he is found?
Strobe lighting can be used to describe how confused he is
It can also create a level of stress and anxiety that Adam is feeling when he begins to realise the great amount of abuse he received by the other characters
How can a blackout affect the audience?
A blackout will create a huge buildup of tension and make them question the situation of the play and try to interpret what will happen next keeping the audience captivated and intrigued
