DNA Structure And Function Flashcards
(7 cards)
Where is DNA found?
In the nucleus of eukaryotic cells.
In the cytoplasm of prokaryotic cells.
What is the structure of a nucleotide?
Phosphate - deoxyribose sugar - nitrogenous base
What are the 4 Nitrogenous bases?
- cytosine (C)
- guanine (G)
- thymine (T)
- adenine (A)
What is DNA?
DNA is a double helix structure made of two antiparallel strands of nucleotides linked by hydrogen bonding between complimentary base pairs.
What is the strand being held together by?
It is held toghether by hydrogen bonds between the bases
What are the complementary base pairings?
Adenine (A) only pairs with Thymine (T)
Guanine (G) only pairs with Cytosine (C)
Why is DNA called the blueprint of life?
DNA contains the instructions needed for an organism to grow, develop, survive and reproduce
