Q

Describe the herpes virus life cycle

A

Fusion (tegument enters)
genome enters nucleus
transcription and replication (viral polym) occurs in the nucleus
translation occurs outside the nucleus

immediate early: proteins for transcription

early: proteins for replication
late: proteins for virion

exocytosis

Q

HV latency

A

genome is present in a cell but infectious virions are absent

the genome is retained for life

Q

Epstein Barr Virus
Transmission
infects what?
latency

A
  • Transmitted through saliva
  • infects oral epithelial and B cells in tonsils
    childhood infections often asymptomatic
    older teens can get mononucleosis

14
Q

EBV Treatment and Diagnosis

A

Use clinical signs and blood smears (elevated WBC and atypical lymphocytes)
For cancer treat immunosupression and use oncotherapy
There are no useful antivirals or vaccines

Q

Cytomegalovirus (CMV)

Primary infection

A

usually asymptomatic

Syndrome like Infectious mononucleosis can occur (absence of sore throat and presence of rash = differ from EBV)

16
Q

Congenital CMV

A

Usually in babies whose moms had CMV during pregnancy
Very uncommon
Can cause hearing loss, other neurologic complications

17
Q

CMV and Immunosupression

A

AIDs patients and Organ transplant recipients/donor
Can cause transplant failure
causes death in AIDs patients

18
Q

CMV Diagnosis and Treatment

A

Pregnant women can not take any of the antiviral drugs

There is no vaccine

19
Q
Roseola
cells infected
transmission
symptoms
Diagnosis and treatment
A
Infects CD4 and T cells
Latency in these as well
transmitted in saliva
fever followed by rash
mostly in babies
no treatment- avoid giving antibiotics
prevent by normal hygiene
