Average gift size
Average gift is calculated by dividing the total money raise by the number of gift given. Organizations often track the statistic for both the entire doing our base as well as individual donors.
Capital campaign
A structured fundraising effort outside of the annual campaign to secure significant gifts and pledges during a defined timeframe for unique purposes, such as building, endowment, or equipment
Capital gift
A charitable contribution, designated or intended for the purchase and or construction of a new building or property, or the improvement and or renovation of an existing building, property, or physical space
Case for support
The collection of information that illustrates why an organization is worthy of support
Cause marketing
When a company donates to an organization in an amount that correlates to the number of individual purchases of the companies, product or services during a defined period of time
Corporate sponsorship
A gift of cash or any kind goods or services by a corporate entity in return for access and recognition at an event or cause
Cost of fundraising
The sum of expenses related to fundraising efforts. These include salaries, payroll, taxes, and benefits, supplies, marketing and advertising, occupancy cost, and other cost related to development.
Cost per dollar raise
Cost per dollar raise calculates the total cost to yield a single dollar of revenue. Also called cost to raise a dollar.(CTRD) it is the inverse of return on investment
Direct marketing
Physical marketing materials, such as letters, flyers, catalogs, etc.
Elements of an effective case
A mission statement, goals, objectives, description of programs and services, finances, governance, structure, staffing, and organizational chart, facilities, and service delivery description, planning an evaluation, and organizational history
Endowment gift
Gifts of cash, investment funds, or property to an organization for the purpose of investing, the principle, while using the dividends or other resulting investment income for charitable purposes
Feasibility study
The formal process of determining both organizational readiness and potential constituency support for a campaign or project. These are typically performed by a third-party consultant or a company that specializes in this area. During the study the consultant attempts to determine:
- Does a compelling case for support exist?
- is there management and staff infrastructure to support this campaign?
- is there sufficient board buying?
- is there sufficient donor interest in giving capacity to support the campaign and it’s fundraising priorities and goals?
Gift agreement
A formal agreement between donor and the recipient which spells out the nature of the gift, how it is to be used, and have the gift will be acknowledged
Gifts in-kind
Gifts of tangible goods or services as opposed to gifts of funds to purchase goods or services
Gifts of property
A gift of property includes any gift of real estate. Examples include homes, farmland, commercial property, and undeveloped land.
Grant proposal writing
Process of responding to a request for proposal (RFP) from a foundation, corporation, or government agency. Grant proposals follow a specific format established by the funding organization, and typically include organizational information, a case statement
