Domain I: Principles of Nutrition Flashcards
Review important foundational nutrition topics (7 cards)
How are Carbohydrates digested? (List enzymes and process)
via amylase. Starches are broken down by amylase via hydrolysis into disaccharides and monosaccharides.
How are Carbohydrates absorbed? and why? (List process or processes)
via Facilitated diffusion or active transport because these macromolecules are water soluble and cannot readily cross the membrane without help
How are fats digested? (List enzymes and process)
via lipase Triglycerides are hydrolyzed by lipase into free fatty acids, monoglycerides, and glycerol
How are fats or lipids absorbed? (List process or processes)
Diffusion across the membrane
How are proteins digested? (List enzymes and process)
via gastric acid and pepsin. As hydrochloric acid increases, pepsin (a digestive enzyme). This macromolecule is broken down into peptides, dipeptides, tripeptides, and amino acids.
How are proteins absorbed?
via facilitated diffusion or active transport. Remember amino acids can be positively or negatively charged.
