DP6 Role of Episodic and Semantic Memory Flashcards
(13 cards)
What are the two main components of Autobiographical Memory?
Episodic autobiographical memory
Semantic autobiographical memory
Explain episodic autobiographical memory
Memory of specific personal experiences
Explain semantic autobiographical memory
General knowledge about yourself
What is Autobiographical Memory?
A memory system consisting of episodes recalled from a person’s life, based on a mixture of episodic and semantic memory.
How does Autobiographical Memory relate to our “Sense of Self”
- Links past events into a personal history.
- Relates self through past, present, future.
- Forms a life narrative.
Reconstruction of Autobiographical Memory
Through reconstruction we combine stored information with other available information to what what is believed to be more coherent, complete or accurate memory.
How is Autobiographical Memory involved in Future Thinking?
Encompasses our ability to imagine and envision possible future scenarios, as well as the ability to **retrieve memories from our personal past. **
For example:
Thinking about a future job interview often involves recalling a past one (episodic) and applying personal knowledge (semantic).
What are the two disorders/conditions related to Autobiographical Memory?
Aphantasia (Lifelong condition)
Alzheimers (Neurodegenerative Disease)
How does Aphantasia impact our Autobiograpical Memory?
Impaired visual imagery affects vividness and retrieval of episodic memories.
How does Alzheimers impact our Autobiograpical Memory?
Early damage to the hippocampus impairs retrieval of episodic details. Loss of semantic memory in the later stage.
Changes in the brain as a result of Alzheimers
Amyloid Plaque
Neurofibrillary Tangle
Brain Atrophy
Ways that can assist diagnosing Alzheimers
CT scan, MRI scan
