1
Q

How do you create an ester

A

You need to do a condensation or dehydration with a carboxylic acid and an alcohol

2
Q

What is an ester in terms of strucutre

A

It is a carboxylic acid without the OH group and without a H from the alcohol your removing H20

3
Q

How do you name the ester

A

The first part from the carboxylic acid the second part from the alcohol. So ethyl from ethanoate carboxylic acid and methane ate from the alcohol

4
Q

What is an easy way to identify esters

A

By smelling them

5
Q

What indicator to use in titration and why

A

Methyl orange or phenolphthalein because they have a distinct end point or colour change unlike universal indicator

6
Q

Why do a rough run

A

Because it fills the jet of the burrette

7
Q

What is concordancey

A

It is when you have identical results in a titration it means you can end

8
Q

How to calculate moles in a titration

A

Concentration X volume

9
Q

How to convert from cm3 to dm3

A

Divide this by 1000

10
Q

What does phenolphthalein change colour from

A

Pink to colourless

11
Q

What colour change in methyl orange

A

Orange to green

12
Q

What is equilibrium

A

The forward reaction is occurring at the same rate as the products become the reactants

13
Q

What causes temporary hard water

A

Calcium hydro carbonate

14
Q

What does calcium hydrocarbon ate break down in to

A

Calcium carbonate water and carbon dioxide

Not the calcium carbonate is insoluble

15
Q

What is a resin

A

It is a solid polymer insoluble in water it is used in an ion exchange column

16
Q

How does an ion exchange column work

A

A resin contains lots of sodium ions or hydrogen ions, these ions then replace or exchange places with the magnesium or calcium ions which cause hardness. This leaves a calcium resin no sodium in the water

17
Q

What causes temporary hard water

A

Calcium hydro carbonate

18
