What is the mechanism of action for macrolides/macrocyclic lactones?

A

Hold open chloride channels on muscles cells, by bonding with the glutamate receptors that controls the chloride channel. Holding the channels open means that chlorides flow into the cell, making it more negative and thus harder to depolarize. When the muscle cells can’t depolarize, there is muscle paralysis. A parasite that can’t swallow or use muscles for movement then starved to death and/or gets flushed out by not being able to swim upstream in the GI tract.
