What did Duck suggest?
Duck suggested that when relationships breakdown they go through a series of phases
What is there with each stage?
There’s a threshold which is a point where their perception of the relationship changes - usually for the worse
What happens once this threshhold has been reached?
The person is ‘tipped’ to the next phase of breakdown
What is the first stage of relationship breakdown?
The intrapsychic stage
What type of process is the intrapsychic stage?
It is a cognitive process
What happens in the intrapsychic stage?
One member of the couple identifies the problem but doesnt talk about them with the other partner
What does the dissatisfied partner worry about in the intrapsychic stage?
They worry about the reasons for their dissatisfaction
What does the dissatisfed partner weigh up in the intrapsychic stage?
They weigh up the pros and cons of the relationship and evaluate alternatives.
What does the dissatisfied partner begin to make in the intrapsychic stage?
They begin to make plans for the future
What is the second stage of relationship breakdown?
The dyadic stage
What is the threshhold of the intrapsychic stage?
The dissatisfied partner can’t stand this anymore and indicates something needs to change
What is the threshold for the dyadic stage?
They come to the conclusion “I would be justified in withdrawing”
What does the dyadic stage focus on?
It focuses on the interpersonal processes between the partners
