What did Utne et al do?
They carried out a questionnaire of 118 recently married couples who had been together for more than 2 years before marrying, measuring equity
What did Utne et al find?
They found that couples who considered their relationship equitable were more satisfied than those who saw themselves as overbenefitting or underbenefitting
Why does Utne et al’s research support equity theory?
This supports that equity theory is an important factor to predict satisfaction in romantic relationships.
What is a limitation of much of the research into equity theory?
Much of the research into equity theory is correlational
Why is much of the research into equity theory being correlational a limitation?
It is a limitation because cause and effect cannot be established between inequity and dissatisfaction in relationships

It may not apply to other cultures
Why may equity theory not apply to other cultures?
It may not apply to other cultures because couples from individualistic cultures (USA) considered their relationships to be most satisfying when the relatiionship was most equitable whereas couples from collectivist cultures (Jamacia) were most satisfied when they were overbenefitting
