Dynamic Processing Flashcards
(11 cards)
Which instrument is most commonly used to trigger side chain compression?
Kick drum.
What type of rhythm is very commonly used with side chain compression?
4 on the floor.
Name the compressor parameters you would use to control side chain compressor.
- Ratio.
- Threshold.
- Attack.
- Release.
How do the threshold and ratio need to be set for side chain compression if we want heavy compression?
High ratio, low threshold.
What is expansion in dynamic processing?
Expanding dynamic range (makes loud parts louder and quiet parts quieter).
What is the knee in compression?
How a compressor transitions to compressing the signal as it approached / exceeds the threshold.
What form of compression can be used for mastering?
Limiting.
How does a de-esser work?
Reduces / eliminates sibilance by compressing the sibilant range.
What were the loudness wars?
Trend of making recorded music louder and more compressed over time. Began in 1990s and peaked around 2005.
What does LUFS mean?
Loudness units relative to full scale, how loud a recording is compared to the max volume it could be (0dB).
What were the negative aspects of the loudness wars?
Lead to a loss of detail, warmth and dynamic range.
