What is the innervation pattern of the external auditory canal?

A

Nerve supply (somatosensory) is largely by the auriculotemporal nerve with vagus nerve hitting a small part near the tympanic membrane. (neurovasculature listed hits outer surface of tympanic membrane as well as external auditory canal)

What is the innervation pattern of the tympanic membrane?

A

Tympanic membrane is innervated by:

  • The auriculotemporal nerve on most of the outer surface
  • A twig from the vagus nerve on outer surface at the posteroinferior part
  • The tympanic plexus (mostly glossopharyngeal n.) on the inner surface
