Labs

Hemoglobin
Hgb

Purpose:
Transport oxygen to tissue & CO2 back to lungs. RBC’s are made up of hemoglobin. If this is low think Iron deficiency anemia.

A

Q

Labs

Hematocrit

Purpose: is the ratio of the volume of packed RBCs to the total blood volume.
If it’s low than that indicates a decrease in 02 capacity.

A

Hematocrit

male 41-51%

female 36-46%

This number increases with DEHYDRATION

Q

Labs

Blood urea nitrogen BUN
Liver/kidney test
Purpose: The test measures the level of urea in the blood. Urea is a waste product that comes from protein. It’s what is left over. Urea is made in the liver but then it is the kidneys responsibility to get rid of it through the urine.

A

8-25 mg/dL (Microgram/deciliter)

Q

Labs

Creatinine

This is a test of kidney function. The creatinine clearance rate helps to estimate the glomerular Filtration rate (GFR)

A
  1. 6-1. 3 mg/dL

High creatinine signals renal failure

Q

Liver enzymes
1. Aspartate aminotransferase (AST or SGOT) enzyme that is released when the liver or muscle cells are injured.

  1. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT or SGPT) like AST this is an enzyme that is found in the liver that is normally low but when liver damage has occurred this value will be elevated.
A

Based on Saunders
AST or SGOT 0-35 U/L

ALT or SGPT 4-36 U/L

These values elevate with hepatitis or jaundice.

Q

Labs

PTT
Partial thromboplastin time

A blood test that helps doctors assess the body’s ability to form a blood clot. The test measures how many seconds it takes for a clot to form.

A

Clotting should occur in 60 to 70 seconds.

If the client is taking an anticoagulant it will be 1.5 X 2.5 times longer 120 to 140 seconds.

aPTT
Activated partial thromboplastin time

A blood test that is also used to measure the time it takes for a clot to form however an activator is added to the blood done speeds up the clotting time. This test is used mostly to monitor clients response to heparin.

A

aPTT
30 to 40 seconds

Is the client is taking an anticoagulant it will be 1. 5 x 2.5 times longer 60 to 80 seconds.

17
Q

Labs

INR
International normalize racial

This is a blood test to determine the clotting time when a client is on an anticoagulant usually vitamin K antagonists such as warfarin.

A

INR
1-2

2.0 to 3.0 is standard for clients taking warfarin

18
Q

Labs

Urine specific gravity

This is done the test kidney function. This test looks at all of the particles in the urine.

A
  1. 0 1 6-1. 0 2 2

Urine sample collection 1 to 2 ounces first thing in the morning.

19
Q

Labs

Platelets

Smallest of the three major types of blood cells.
Which are red, white, and platelets.
The function is to prevent bleeding.

A

Platelets 150,000 to 400,000 uL microliter

20
Q

What common medication will quickly disrupt platelet function?

A

Aspirin
