Anorexia Nervosa

- Low body weight (

Bulimia Nervosa

- Recurrent binge-eating
- Feeling out of control
- Compensatory behavior (Vomiting, laxative abuse, excessive exercise, fasting)
- Extreme focus on shape/weight

Not an effective weight reduction mechcanism

Binging and purging slows down metabolism

Devalues the seriousness. Need to support

Most frequent causes of death in AN pts

1. Suicide 50:50 violent/non-violent
2 Anorexia starvation
3. Cancer
- Avg age at death: 34 years old

Biological factors

1. Family hx of eating disorder or chemical dependency
2. Mood disorder, anxiety or depression
3. Traits/Temperament
4. Increased BMI prior to onset
5. Early onset puberty
6. Cognitive lags - set shifting/integrating complexity

Environmental factors

1. Go fast, highly competitive/social environment
2. Dieting culture - war on obesity
3. High risk sports/industry
4. Family Hx of severe dieting/exercise
5. Family constellation - enmeshed/disengaged

Common precipitants to ED

1. Onset of puberty between 11-14
2. Major transitions - separation/individuation/identity
3. Family difficulty
4. Onset of co-morbid illness
5. Innocent weight loss - increased exercise/performance enhancement

Etiology of eating disorders

1. Gene
2. FHx = 12x more likely for AN and 4x for BNH
3. 50-80% genetic influence

What is inherited?
-Temperamental traits
- Co-morbid anxiety, depression, OC tendencies
